Ecobee Vs Nest Smart Thermostat
Ecobee Vs Nest: The ecobee and Nest are generally considered the best two smart thermostats accessible. If you read just about any smart thermostat review, you’ll see these two almost constantly come out on top.
I’ve used both commodities and I’ve found 8 key differences. The diversities between ecobee and Nest aren’t huge. But, they ARE different and the characteristics DO matter. So read on and I’ll fill you in on what I’ve learned.
Nest Vs Ecobee
Although they’re reduced the same, the Nest and Ecobee smart thermostats aren’t created equal. If you want to cut down on your utility bill and keep your home climate-controlled, you’ve got to do your inquiry before buying a smart thermostat.
Happily for you, we’ve done your homework for you and assessed out the two leading smart thermostats on the market. Below we’ve noted the key differences in appearance, functionality, and rapport between these two smart devices.
Both the Nest Learning Thermostat and the Ecobee 4 cost $249 retail originally, although frequently you can find deals on each. Ecobee dropped the retail price on the Ecobee 4 to $199 on its website. You can also customarily buy a Nest Learning Thermostat for around $225 on Amazon. However, because the Ecobee 4 currently sells for only $199, it edges out Nest in terms of price.
Ecobee 4 Vs Nest
Nearly all thermostats operate individually based on the temperature reading of the room they’re in. That can make other rooms of your house controlled by the same thermostat troublesome if, say, the thermostat is on a wall that earns a lot of sun.
Only two thermostat inventors, Ecobee and Nest, have a solution: wireless remote temperature sensors. You place them in hot or cold rooms and they factor those temperature readings into the thermostat’s programming to make those areas more comfortable. Each brand’s top-of-the-line models, the Ecobee4 and Nest Information Thermostat, work with these inaccessible sensors. Despite that similarity, and the fact that both models perform well in our lab tests, the two thermostats are far from interchangeable.
After two years of testing Nest and Ecobee products, I’ve determined Ecobee SmartThermostat (Ecobee5) is the best smart thermostat because you’ll get the most control, flexibility and smart home rapport. Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) is a great system for those who lack the c-wire or want an easy installation with thoughtless money savings.
There are four Ecobee and two Nest thermostats on Amazon. Read the “Things To Note” section below to understand the names and the differences.
I’ll compare and contrast the two most advanced smart thermostats (Ecobee SmartThermostat vs. Nest Learning Thermostat) by evaluating four categories: smarts, software, design, and setup.
Ecobee Vs Nest Thermostat
“One big difference between the Nest and Ecobee is their different approaches to determining when to adjust the temperature,” says Peter Anzalone, CR’s test engineer for smart thermostats. The Nest uses a combination of occupancy sensing and geofencing to determine if you are home. The Ecobee relies on multiple occupancy sensors and a user-defined schedule.
Which one is better? We decided to pit these similarly equipped models against one another to see which thermostat offers better performance, smarts, and compatibility with HVAC systems. Below you’ll find the results from our Ecobee vs. Nest face-off.

At CR, we’ve tested hundreds of thermostats over the years. Once upon a time they weren’t very accurate, but today’s models are able to keep rooms close to the set temperature. So instead of testing for temperature accuracy, our labs focus on usability. That includes testing ease of manual operation (with the same standards we use for nonconnected programmable thermostats) and three criteria specific to smart thermostats: smart-home features, automation of heating and cooling, and wireless setup.
Our evaluation of smart-home features examines such elements as alerts, app control, and geofencing (which tells the thermostat when you’re coming and going). These individual features factor into a thermostat’s Smart IQ score, which allows you to see just how “smart” one thermostat is compared with another.
For automation, we check to see whether smart thermostats learn your habits and routines to adjust temperatures for you. And we test wireless setup, which includes connecting the thermostats to WiFi and setting up the corresponding smartphone apps. We also set up voice control with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Siri if integrations with these digital assistants are available.
Ecobee Vs Nest Reddit
It has a stainless steel outer ring that reflects your wall color and allows it to blend in with any décor. The face lights up with blue light when your system is cooling and orange light when it’s heating.
The solid construction is obvious when you handle the thermostat. Its heavy and feels sturdy.
I’m a proud ecobee user, but I have no problem admitting that the Nest looks great. The ecobee looks good too, but it just doesn’t have the same “cool” factor as the Nest.
If you prefer your thermostat to be something that doesn’t say “look at me”, you may prefer the look of ecobee. You could also consider the lower-cost Nest e, which I mention below.
One of the primary reasons many people choose smart thermostats is because they want to cut down on utility bill costs. Although both models mentioned here can help you reach your energy goals, the Nest approach is a little more user-friendly.
Is nest or ecobee better?
Ecobee is more efficient than Nest at knowing if you’re home or away because it has a motion sensor on the base and uses additional SmartSensors to detect motion and temperature. One room sensor is included with Ecobee SmartThermostat (none with Ecobee3 Lite), and you can add up to 32 SmartSensors to any Ecobee system.
