Buying a Used Bike

Buying a used bike can be a great way to save money on a new bike. Motorcycle Detailing Brisbane The key is to be smart about your buying choices and to take the time to make sure that you are getting the best deal possible.

The first thing to consider is the condition of the bike. This will allow you to judge whether it is worth the price and if it is in good enough condition to be sold on.

If it is a bike that you have seen in person, check it over for signs of damage, says Darci Revier, DHSc, CSCS, director of education at the National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA) and NETA-certified cycling instructor in Missouri. Look for cracks, dents, and other defects that may indicate issues with the frame.

This is a good point to get someone else to help you as they will have more experience with the bikes and may be able to spot problems sooner than you would.

One of the most important things to check on a used bike is its drive train. These are the parts that make up your bike’s pedaling mechanism and these components can either make or break the bike’s value.

There are several major brands that manufacture drive trains such as Shimano and Sram. Both offer entry-level and pro level models and more expensive options are often a better fit for riders who are looking to increase their speed, shift faster, or have the most braking power in any weather condition.

Another important component of the drive train is the cranks. These connect the pedal to the bottom bracket and can also be a sign of a potential problem. Try wiggling the cranks and see if they rotate only around the pedal axis or if they wiggle in other directions too.

If the cranks are rusted, damaged, or broken, you should not buy it. This will not only make the bike hard to ride, it can lead to costly repairs down the road.

The tires should be in good condition as well. If they are worn out and show cracks in the center tread or ragged side cornering knobs, it is a sign that the tires have been sitting in storage for a long time and it might be time to replace them.

Lastly, look at the shocks and brakes. These can be a deal-breaker for many people, especially if they have been bled recently or are more than a few years old.

When you are ready to make a purchase, it is always best to go into a bike shop and meet with a professional to find out what size and style of bike will work for you. This will give you a much better idea of what to expect when buying a used bike and also allow you to test ride a few different bikes.
